• IMAGO History, Ende des afrikanischen Sklavenhandels und die Abschaffung der Sklaverei: 1807-1888 Slave Pen, Alexandria, Virginia 1863 Andrew Joseph Russell American Better known for his later views commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad, A. J. Russell, a captain in the 141st New York Infantry Volunteers, was one of the few Civil War photographers who was also a soldier. As a photographer-engineer for the U.S. Military Railroad Con struction Corps, Russell s duty was to make a historical record of both the technical accomplishments of General Herman Haupt s engineers and the battlefields and camp sites in Virginia. This view of a slave pen in Alexandria guarded, ironically, by Union officers shows Russell at his most insightful; the pen had been converted by the Union Army into a prison for captured Confederate soldiers. • Slavery is commonly problematized as a Southern issue within the study of American history, but it was practiced throughout the colonies and early United States until the turn of the 19th century.

In no place in the North was this more prevalent than Rhode Island. At the time of the American Revolution the state had a black population (mostly slave) estimated at 6-7% (double the percentage in any other New England state). Slaves were not emancipated by law in that state until 1784, and even then the process was gradual.

Even less savory was Newport, Rhode Island s status as the center of the American slave trade. Until this trade was forced underground by the prohibition of the trade in 1808, it represented the number Supplier:xCPAxMediaxCo.xLtd. 1060_05_cpa0028911
 • IMAGO History, Ende des afrikanischen Sklavenhandels und die Abschaffung der Sklaverei: 1807-1888 The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was principally a Quaker society founded in the eighteenth century by Thomas Clarkson. The slave trade had been abolished throughout the British Empire in 1807. In August 1833 the British government passed the Slavery Abolition Act, advocated by William Wilberforce, which abolished slavery in the British Empire from August 1834, when some 800,000 people in the British empire became free.

This monumental painting records the 1840 convention of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society which was established to promote worldwide abolition. Estimates of the number involved vary greatly but it seems that there may easily have been 10 million, perhaps even twice that number.

Two-thirds of African slaves were female.
