INDIAN REVOLUTIONARY LEADER ON HIS MARCH OF INDEPENDENCE Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian revolutionary leader - is now on his great March of Independence, which started from Ahmedabad to the Gulf of Cambay, a distance of over 100 miles. Gandhi who has with him a pioneer band of 72 civil resistance volunteers, is marching to the Coast to prepare Salt in the Salt Mines which are controlled by the British Government.   • Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 30 January 1948) was the pre-eminent political and ideological leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He pioneered satyagraha. This is defined as resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa, or total non-violence.
