  • RECORD DATE NOT STATED WW1 - Captured UC5 U-Boat in the River Thames WW1 - UC-5 was a German Type UC minelayer submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy during World War I. Seen here moored up on the banks of the River Thames following capture. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 19th June 1915 as SM UC-5. She served in World War I under the command of Herbert Pustkuchen (June 1915 - December 1915) and Ulrich Mohrbutter (December 1915 - April 1916).   • WW1 - U-14 rammed by British steam trawler, the Oceanic II WW1 - SM U-14 was one of the 329 submarines serving in the Imperial German Navy in World War I.   • WW1 - German U-21 sinks SS Linda Blanche in the Irish Sea WW1 - German U-Boat U-21 ( Otto Hersing ), sinks the British steamer SS Linda Blanche in the Irish Sea on the 30th January 1915. The steamer was bound from Manchester to Belfast when the U-21 rose and came alongside her. Captain Ellis, her skipper, was required to go on board the submarine with his ship s papers. In the meantime, Germans handed cigars and cigarettes to the British crew. The latter were given 10 minutes to collect their belongings and take to the boats. Four Germans boarded the steamer, and placed two explosive shells which blew up Linda Blanche , and sank her. The crew rowed to a trawler, which took them to Fleetwood.   • RECORD DATE NOT STATED The lifeboats of RMS Lusitania, 7 May 1915, (1926). On 7 May 1915, a German submarine torpedoed and sank the Lusitania off the south-west coast of Ireland near Kinsale. Although an unarmed passenger ship, she was carrying munitions. 1198 people lost their lives, of whom 128 were US citizens. The sinking was a main cause of America s entry into World War I.
