  • Thaddeus S. C. Lowe (1832-1913) and his Balloon Thaddeus Sobieski Coulincourt Lowe (who called himself Professor Lowe) was an aviation pioneer and a Civil War hot air balloonist. He was Chief Aeronaut of the Army of the Potomac during the war. His corps had seven balloons. He made over 3,000 ascents, some from Navy ships.
