  • Jan 01, 1960 - Nuremberg, France - As Germany s minister of economic affairs from 1949 to 1963, LUDWIG ERHARD crafted the plan for West Germany s post-World War II economic recovery, sometimes called the German economic miracle. In 1957 he was named vice chancellor, and in 1963 he succeeded Konrad Adenauer as chancellor. In late 1966, Erhard s government fell after the four Free Democratic party ministers in his cabinet resigned and left him without a ruling majority in the federal parliament. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, Adenauer, who had not hidden distaste for them, lost his positions, was forced to go into exile for a year in an abbey and was later interned in a prison camp. Adenauer was elected Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany on 15 September 1949. His main aim was to ensure West Germany s transition to a sovereign, democratic state. He held power for the next fourteen years and during that time played an important role in restoring good relations with France and the United States.
