  • Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish author and historian. He was the most highly regarded social critic and philosopher of Victorian England who wrote on the issues of democracy, heroism and revolution.   • Marie Wilton, Lady Bancroft (1839-1921) Marie Effie Wilton, Lady Bancroft, an actress and theater manager, was the child of provincial actors and performed on stage from a very young age. Her London debut was in 1856, when she shone as Perdita in The Winter s Tale. Wilton continued to perform in burlesque, particularly at the Strand. Deciding to go into theater management, Wilton borrowed one thousand pounds and renovated an old theatre nicknamed the Dust Hole. Renamed the Prince of Wales s, it opened in 1865. The new theatre became one of the most popular in London. In Wilton s company was an actor named Squire Bancroft who had performed with her before. They married in 1867.   • Ada Cavendish (1839-1895) Ada Cavendish was a popular British actress. She made her debut at the New Royal Theatre in 1863. Cavendish played roles such as Juliet, Beatrice, and Rosalind. She also appeared in plays by the crime writer, Wilkie Collins, particularly as Miss Gwilt in Armadale. Cavendish performed frequently in the U.S. and was affiliated with Wallack s Theatre.   • Minnie Walton (1852?-1879) Minnie Walton was an actress. She was a member of the company that performed for the opening of the California Theatre in San Francisco in 1869. Walton died in San Francisco. The San Francisco Call, a California newspaper, recorded the death of a Minnie Walton Lyster in 1879 at age twenty-seven.   • Gertrud Synnerberg Madame Gertrud Synnerberg was a soprano. In March, 1890, she made her New York debut as Emilia in Otello at the Metropolitan with the Italian Opera Company. Later that same month Synnerberg sang Amneris in Aida and in April she performed in Faust. The vocalist sang the role of Lucia in 1893 at the Garden Theatre with the Hinrichs Opera Company. Synnerberg appears here in an Elizabethan male costume.
