  • Orange and Alexandria Railroad Bridge, near Union Mills, Virginia ca. 1863 Andrew Joseph Russell American A. J. Russell, a captain in the 141st New York Infantry Volunteers, was one of the few Civil War photographers who also was a soldier. As a photographer-engineer for the U.S. Military Railroad Construction Corps, Russell was responsible for recording both the technical accomplishments of General Herman Haupt s engineers and the battlefields and campsites in Virginia. This view of soldiers and civilians below and upon a railroad bridge also shows a burned blockhouse (upper left corner) designed by Haupt and intended to protect a vital creek crossing.. Made just hours after a fierce fight above Fredericksburg, Virginia, the haunting picture shows the destruction by heavy artillery shell of a Confederate caisson (a two-wheeled vehicle for artillery ammunition) and its team of eight horses.   • Woodchoppers Huts in a Virginia Forest. On the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. Wood Supplied U.S.M.R. Railroads under Supervision of Major Brayton June 1863 Andrew Joseph Russell Commissioned by the United States Military Railroad to document all its operations, Russell seized the opportunity to record perhaps the most curious habitations of the Civil War: the crude, teepee-shaped mud and timber dwellings built by migratory woodcutters along the forested route of the Orange & Alexandria Railroad in northern Virginia. The habitations were constructed and primarily inhabited by African American men employed by the Union army to chop timber for railroad ties and bridges and fuel for military locomotives..
